Why pay so much on fuel driving your car or vehicle - Just a few simple steps will help you keep more money in your wallet.
Compared to other European countries (EU), UK petrol and diesel prices are high and rising
1. Check your air filter
A clean air filter is the key to good fuel economy and cheaper driving. A dirty air filter will restrict the flow of air into the engine, which harms your cars performance and thus its fuel economy.
2. Check your tire pressure
Under inflated tires are one of the most common causes of lower than average MPG. Checking and inflating your tyres can save a small fortune on your fuel bills, and make your car safer to drive.
3. Slow down
As your increase your speed, your fuel economy decreases. Driving within the speed limit can have some very good effects on your fuel economy. Also driving between 45 and 55 miles per hour is the optimum limit for fuel economy in your vehicle so try to stick to these speeds when you can. Keeping your speed down can reduce the fuel consumption of the engine.
4. Accelerate with care
Do no put your foot flat down on the accelerator, this just wastes fuel and most of it will come out of your exhaust without even being burnt in the engine. Try to change gear when the revs reach about 2.5 thousands revs and no more.
5. Economy in the Car
Dont waste power whilst driving your car - Try to only use the air conditioning when it is really needed and just open a window, this can save you 5% or more on your fuel economy. It is worth considering though that at high speeds it can be more efficient to have the air conditioning on as the window will cause some drag on the car.
6. Optional Extras
When buying optional extras for your vehicle such as low profile tyres and allow wheels, remember that these will reduce your fuel economy.
7. Lose weight from the car
The more weight in your car the more power needed by the engine to keep you on the move (and the more fuel the motor will use). Have a look in your car and boot and see if you really need everything that is in there.
8. Don't drive
The very best way of saving on your petrol or diesel bill is simply not to drive. For short distances walk or cycle.
9. Check your oil
As well as maintaining and making sure you have the correct oil level, motorists who want to save money on fuel should also check the type of oil used in the engine, as there are some energy-efficient oil types that can increase the number of miles per litre.
10. Fuel Prices
Shop around for the best petrol or diesel prices, even a 1 pence (1p) a difference per litre can really add up.
11. Car Sharing
If at all possible see if you can car share. Why drive to the office every day on your own if a neighbour works near to where you work. Try taking it in turns to drive.
